Computer-aided assessment

Computer aided assessment is a combination of both assessment and e-learning. Subject specific computer aided assessment of mathematics has moved significantly away from multiple choice questions and similar. Automating the assessment process raises some very interesting questions about the nature of mathematics. It forces us to think carefully about how we choose to represent them, both at the surface level of syntax and display, but also at the deeper level of representation and meaning. It forces teachers to articulate the properties they seek in a "correct answer" in a precise and detailed way not present in traditional marking by hand. Teachers must move away from a mind-set of "does it look like my answer?" to using a more specific and nuanced language.

Work supported by the MSOR network in respect of STACK and a series of occasional publications on CAA can be accessed using the tabs on the lefthand side.

Considerable work has been undertaken to further develop computer aided assessment as part of the National HE STEM programme (www.hestem.ac.uk)
