The HE Mathematics Curriculum Summit recommended problem solving and the assessment of problem solving as a priority for curriculum development. Two projects were supported in this area.

Trevor Hawkes, Coventry University, and Chris Sangwin, University of Birmingham surveyed problem-solving teaching in mathematics departments in universities in England and Wales, and studied a number of departments closely. The result of this work was a guide to inform the implementation of problem-solving in undergraduate mathematics. A team led by Sue Pope, University of Manchester, working with Liverpool Hope University and NRICH, University of Cambridge developed a virtual problem-solving environment which hosts problems suitable for a range of undergraduate mathematics courses.
