Developing Graduate Skills in HE Mathematics Programmes – Case Studies of Successful Practice
A project to collect examples of good practice produced a booklet Developing Graduate Skills in HE Mathematics Programmes – Case Studies of Successful Practice. Edited by Jeff Waldock, Sheffield Hallam University, this is a collection of seventeen case studies from fifteen UK HE Mathematics departments which serve to illustrate some ways in which the development of specific graduate skills have been successfully embedded into the curriculum. This can be downloaded from the Developing Graduate Skills in HE Mathematics Programmes project website.
A series of mini-projects were funded under the Developing Graduate Skills Uptake Programme. This aimed to allow other universities to take up ideas from the booklet. The following mini-projects were funded:
- Mathematical Presentation and Communication Skills within the Core Curriculum (Andrew Neate, Swansea);
- Maths Careers: Greenwich Graduates where are they now? (Noel-Ann Bradshaw, Greenwich);
- Progress files - Greenwich implementation (Tony Mann, Greenwich).
Maths-focused resources equivalent to generic communication skills resources
Work in this area was recommended by the Mathematics HE Curriculum Summit. Two projects were supported under this title:
- Enhancing the communication and speaking skills of mathematics undergraduates (James Groves, Lancaster);
- Teaching students to write mathematics (Kevin Houston, Leeds) (watch video presentations, access teaching resources and get the DVD).
Further Work Developing Graduate Skills in HE Mathematics Programmes
A follow-on booklet, Further Work Developing Graduate Skills in HE Mathematics Programmes, was published containing reports from the five additional projects.
